“America's Team.”The team that much of America loved, and perhaps just as much loved to hate. The title these days has fallen on the Kansas City Chiefs, who play the San Francisco 49ers next weekend in their fourth Super Bowl in five years. Just like so many versions of “America's Team," though, a certain amount of fatigue also is setting in. They can make it four next Sunday, when they play the 49ers in a Super Bowl trending to be the most expensive ticket in history. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are aiming to become the first back-to-back Super Bowl champs in 19 years when they face the San Francisco 49ers on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. The Packers dominated the Chiefs in the first Super Bowl on Jan. 15, 1967, winning 35-10. It was the second of four Super Bowl losses for Minnesota in a seven-year span. The Steelers returned to the Super Bowl following the 1978 season and again defeated Tom Landry, Roger Staubach and the Cowboys 35-31. Montana had 297 yards passing and five TDs to earn his third Super Bowl MVP award.

The San Francisco 49ers finally climbed back up the playoff mountain to return to the Super Bowl only to find a familiar foe waiting for them. When the Niners get a second shot at a Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs it will be a rare title game rematch in this short of a span. Here's a look at the other times there was a Super Bowl rematch within five seasons of the first meeting. COWBOYS vs. BILLSDallas and Buffalo had the only Super Bowl rematch in consecutive seasons, meeting at the end of the 1992 and 1993 campaigns. Jayne Withers teaches classes about dining etiquette to both children and adults in Florida. I always enjoyed teaching, which is probably why I started my etiquette business after decades of working in publishing and wellness. From 2016 to this year, my husband and I ran a restaurant called Sealantro British Cafe, and I used some of the contacts from its mailing list to grow my etiquette business. That's a very common theme, and that's how I started teaching adults. I now teach courses on modern formal dining for adults and college students, dining out for children, business dining, international business etiquette, afternoon-tea etiquette, and etiquette for teenagers.

Why I Dress (and Act) Like a Man
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( Maxine Swann | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Slow moving, slow talking, with a melancholy sense of humor, my lover was in many ways my ideal of a man. So when we were told to imitate a man in my drag king workshop, he was the person who came to mind. A drag king workshop is what you might imagine: a gathering of women who want to learn how to dress and behave like men for performance. “We start with the imitation,” she said, “then we go deeper.”Leaning back slowly in my chair, I pictured myself as my lover, a cisgender man, talking to a woman dressed to receive him as I always have: pretty dress, light makeup, underwear off as a little surprise. But the expansion in my body felt great — the open legs, arms and gestures — suggesting how much I usually compressed myself.

The thinking here is that over-the-counter workers earn a wage, and therefore rely less on tips than servers or delivery people. And on top of that, you're being asked, every time you turn around, 'How much would you like to tip?'"

When Nikola Swann heard that Fitch Ratings had removed the United States from its list of risk-free borrowers this week, he felt a sense of satisfaction. More than a decade ago, Swann played a key role in a similar decision: He was Standard & Poor’s primary analyst for its sovereign credit rating on the United States when the agency became the first ever to downgrade the nation’s long-term credit rating amid a debt ceiling standoff in 2011. Bloomberg called the reasons for the downgrade “fundamentally political” in 2011, while others argued that it appropriately reflected a worsening debt crisis. Both a decade ago and this week, partisan politics were cited as one reason for the downgrade. S&P cited “the gulf between the political parties.” Fitch, which made the call two months after the United States narrowly avoided defaulting on its debt, cited “the repeated debt-limit political standoffs and last-minute resolutions.”

And I study higher education, inequality, the internet, and race, class, and gender — all the fun stuff. The Supreme Court decisions are painting a bigger picture of the American dream as one where the scales have been righted back to the original vision of this nation. What we have done is we have voided the 20th century American dream. That is, who will write the new rules for a forward-facing American dream? I do not see a sense of urgency about writing a version of an American dream that appropriately and accurately diagnoses that we’ve lost something here.

Etiquette experts such as Thomas Farley — also known as Mister Manners — are calling the phenomenon "tipflation." And on top of that, you're being asked, every time you turn around, 'How much would you like to tip?' ProfessionalsAs a blanket rule, you don't need to tip anyone who earns a salary or performs a trade. "It's a nice gesture to offer a tip to a worker who goes above and beyond the service," Swann says. "From an etiquette standpoint, we still tip the servers who are bringing us our food," he says.

Barbara Alper/Getty ImagesDrag has become increasingly visible in recent years through mainstream shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and popular public events such as drag brunches, drag bingo and drag queen story hours, in which drag performers read children’s books to young audiences, often at libraries. Some trans drag queens who received hormone injections were “strongly deplored by stage impersonators who (said) that the whole point of female impersonation depends on maleness,” Newton wrote. But “Drag Race” has also skewed viewers’ definition of drag – no drag kings have ever competed on the series, Testa noted, and the judges have long imposed somewhat traditional beauty standards upon contestants. Pickle reads from a book during the Drag Queen Story Hour program at a Los Angeles library in 2019. These lawmakers falsely claim that drag performers “groom” or sexualize children, of which there is also no evidence.
In 2008, Swann Auction Galleries in Manhattan sold three Greek-language manuscripts from the 16th and 17th centuries to an antiquities dealer who returned them two years later after concluding they might have been looted. The dealer was reimbursed but the auction house, its officials said, was unable to reach the person who had consigned the items. So they sat on a shelf for more than a decade, all but lost in the shuffle of daily operations. Three months ago, though, the manuscripts resurfaced when Swann’s chief financial officer went through his office before a renovation. There on a shelf in a long-forgotten plastic bag were the manuscripts, which are believed to have been stolen from a Greek monastery in the midst of World War I.
Drag culture has centuries of history behind it, from Ancient Greece to the Harlem Renaissance. Here's a guide to drag culture in the US and how what it means today. But in drag, cis men don't have to present as women, and cis women don't have to present as men. But at the end of the day, Giuliani wasn't actually participating in drag culture, Walsh said. There's been a lot of grassroots-level organization around drag recently, Walsh said, partly in response to the uptick in violence against drag culture.
But if you don't want to be caught unawares next time, here's what etiquette pros say to do when you receive an unexpected gift. That may have been a poor decision, says Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and owner of the Protocol School of Texas. Start by giving the gift you've received its proper due. From there, you can decide whether or not to reciprocate with a gift of your own, a move that etiquette experts say is entirely optional. "You can follow up with a gift in a day, a week, or even a New Year's gift," Gottsman says.
Even as inflation has strained millions of Americans' budgets, people still plan to get into the spirit of giving this year — some generations more than others. Some 62% of millennials (ages 26 to 41) plan to give a higher-than-usual tip to service industry employees, such as restaurant waitstaff, bartenders, baristas and hairstylists, this holiday season, according to a recent survey from Bankrate. "For folks who are able to give their normal tip or even go above and beyond, I recommend you do so," she says. For those on a tighter budget, however, it's important that you don't give more than you're able to comfortably afford, especially if you're tipping outside the bounds of normal etiquette. While waitstaff and baristas would no doubt be thrilled with an extra something, it's by no means required, says Swann.
Mysteries: ‘Swann’s War’ by Michael Oren
  + stars: | 2022-10-21 | by ( Tom Nolan | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Michael Oren’s thriller “Swann’s War” takes place on the small New England island of Fourth Cliff, “a world utterly cut off from the real one.” It’s 1944, and World War II still rages. In charge of keeping the peace is Mary Beth Swann, who serves as the island’s de facto police captain while her husband, Archie, fights overseas. For the past two years the island has held a camp for Italian POWs. The prisoners, a mostly congenial lot, are well-tolerated by the locals and encouraged to take work on the docks. But one morning, fishermen find the corpse of one of the Italians in their nets; the man has been strangled and then dumped in the sea.
